An introduction to Tarot

When you begin your journey with the tarot, it’s fair to say it will go one of two ways; it will either begin and span many years of learning or it will end as quickly as it began. It quite simply depends on the teacher (you), the cards (not easy to get this one right first time) and your enquirer (you or a friend).

There are also two main avenues for readings that will develop in your relationship with Tarot; you will either become a card reader, knowing each individual card literally and intimately, or they will become the introductory tool to the reading and your connection to spirit will take over. Either way is good and when you begin you won’t really know which will become your own particular style.

My own personal journey spans over twenty years and began with the Arthurian Tarot. I bought many more packs and today read in the main using the Rider Waite pack. I began in a development circle and was taught by meditation with each card – lots of meditation as there are 78 cards! But, as a result I developed a deep and intuitive connection to each card. I slept with cards under my pillow at night, bought a beautiful black silk scarf and wrapped them up for safety. I became obsessed with understanding all that there was to know and bought every book I could lay my hands on. Only when I felt comfortable that I knew each card and had found my own spread (practising on friends) did I feel confident enough to begin readings. The irony is that today I use them as a spirit tool so in truth it doesn’t matter what each individual card means but I still love them, they are my friends and guess what they never lie!.

I hope this article takes on a journey that will give you the same joy I discovered all those years ago.

Tarot Basics

What are Tarot cards and how do they work?

In simple terms they are a large pack of cards and they work through energy, your energy and the energy of your enquirer. They are a tool that allows you to interpret events that ‘may’ happen and you can still choose to accept or change course. It’s important to understand at the very beginning of your relationship with Tarot, that they are not evil, they are not ‘all seeing fore tellers of the future’ and that only you have power over your own destiny.

The actual deck of cards is usually constructed with 22 Major Arcana (which as their name might suggest are major events or life changes) and four suits (energies or subject matters) of 14 cards each called the minor Arcana (every day occurrences).

The four suits

The four suits have different names dependent upon the different tarot pack; however, in the main they are divided into four main areas as follows:

· Pentacles : Money

· Cups : Emotions

· Wands : Activity or Work

· Swords : Thoughts

Pentacles can also be named coins or discs, from a general point of view they relate to money, material things or success. Lots of pentacles in a reading will signify a materialistic time and other cards will generally point to root cause and possible outcome.

Cups also known as hearts or chalices represent the emotions. This suit is perhaps everyone’s favourite as it will indicate affairs of the heart, love interests and emotional well being of the enquirer.

Wands are also known as rods and are easily identifiable with the physical act of doing or work. A reading full of wands will be leading towards an intense time of activity; other cards will indicate the source, reason and possible outcome.

Swords can be a tough suit to deal with as they can look pretty bleak when reading them. They are the suit that’s connected to the mind. As a general rule a lot of swords will indicate a tough time mentally for the enquirer, sometimes leading to melt down. Try and guide the person into a positive state of mind and remind them that the mind will control the outcome so look for the positive cards and guide them accordingly. Remember that the cards are only portraying the current possible outcome which can easily be altered.

The Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana cards start at number 1 which is the beginning and end at number 10 which signifies completion. There are 4 more cards, the court cards, which are interpreted as messengers, direct messages or people. This really does depend upon the pack you are using so they will vary quite significantly from pack to pack.

The Major Arcana

The Major Arcana tends to be the most familiar to the novice and you may recognise some of the cards, the infamous death card is included in the Major Arcana, which conversely is interpreted as a rebirth.

Some readers will remove the entire Minor Arcana and only use the Major Arcana for readings. There are no rules with Tarot, except one, if you read for another person, you must choose your words carefully and always remind the enquirer that this is only a current course of action, it can be changed accordingly to a state of intent.

To clarify for example, if you see the aforementioned Death card – this means that an old way of life will go, a rebirth, it does not mean that you should say ‘someone will die’. That’s not a prediction as people die all the time! And it is cruel.

If you see a number of swords, it means that the person is too involved in their mind and it could be causing loss of clarity, too much thinking unless it’s positive is never good for the soul! Try to help the enquirer see the positive side of the spread by ‘choosing your words with wisdom and caution’.

It is important to remember that what is a passing moment in your life will without doubt leave a lasting impression on the person sat opposite you. They remember what you have said for a long time to come so just take a moment and don’t rush yourself before speaking.

Tarot Spreads

There are many tarot spreads in use and you will usually find a few examples in the accompanying booklet of the pack that you buy. Personally, I use a modified version of the Celtic Cross and a three card spread which I’ve detailed below:

You can also make up your own spread and use what works for you. There is no need to stick with a prescribed spread, as long as your intention is clear when you shuffle the cards and deal them.

Reversed Cards/Meanings

This is always an interesting debate and will very much depend upon personal choice. There are those that insist you cannot give a reading without the reversed cards included and those that will only read upright. I am of the latter group and I know that if the cards wish to advise of a ‘tricky or reversed’ situation they will find a way through the cards whichever way they are laid out. As I really don’t enjoy reversed cards I have included a spot as you will see from above sample readings purely for obstacles/barriers in my readings.

Getting Started

Choose a deck – this can take some time, it’s best to start with a pack that has easy to understand pictorial representation of the meanings. I recommend the bestseller Rider Waite but there are hundreds – you will usually feel drawn to your pack.

Treat them with care – when you open them for the first time, touch each card to imprint your energy, be respectful and keep them in a cloth or pouch for protection as they receive and relay energy.

Get to know them – this is far the part that requires the most patience. You can meditate on each card, study them individually say 7 per week and memorise, perhaps you can join a class, better yet find a development circle where Tarot will become just one tool of many.

Once you feel ready to lay your cards in a spread you will need to create a neutral and peaceful environment. Fill yourself with white protective light and drink a glass of water. You don’t have to do this but you will find reading cards can be very charged energetically and you may become quite exhausted.

The only other step is to shuffle the cards in whichever way you feel comfortable, pass to the enquirer for their imprint and then lay the cards. I also fan a few extra and if I need an additional card for clarity I will ask the enquirer to pick another card from the fan.

Finally, I hope that I have portrayed my passion and enthusiasm for the tarot cards. I also hope that I have convinced you that they are nothing to be afraid of, surrounded by mysticism and superstition, and that they are something you feel you could easily learn and master.

Archangels to the Rescue

Believed to reside in Gods Throne room they are devoted towards the protection and spiritual evolvement of humanity. Each one can support with a different area of our lives and all you have to do is ask! It’s that simple.

Check out the chart below, if there is any area of your life that you need assistance with and pull their energy closer by either wearing their resonating colour or crystal, you can also hold the crystal and meditate, calling their name or simply talk to them. Remember that they are there to assist humanity, which unsurprisingly includes you. Michael is probably the best known of all the Archangels.  He is God’s right hand, the leader of all the angels and the warrior.  He chases away fear and gives us courage by waving his sword at all obstacles.  He works with the Blue ray and his Hebrew name means ‘Who is like God’


Gabriel is typically shown blowing a horn and works alongside Michael.   He is the messenger bearer and works on the white ray.   He advises us to trust and have hope, by listening to our hearts rather than our heads we will feel guided on the right path.    His Hebrew name means ‘Strength of God’


Raphael teaches us all about balance by healing.  He heals with his Green ray of nature.   He is typically called upon to help healers as his Hebrew name means ‘healing power of God’.   Without balance in our lives, we cannot possibly have harmony.


Jophiel is the Archangel of beauty and wisdom.  He allows us to see the beauty in any given situation by shining the golden yellow light from the sun on it.  This will lead to enlightenment.  Jophiel’s Hebrew name means ‘Beauty of God’


Uriel’s Hebrew name means ‘God is Light’ and he is typically represented with fire, energy and passion.  He will help you with life changes and transformation as these are only outside factors.  We all have the answers within us to know when something is right.  He reminds you to look within


Chamuel is the Archangel of unconditional love.  Not the romantic kind but the purest kind of love that helps us have the ability to love all living things.  He helps heal a broken heart and remove a lack of trust in ever finding love.   His Hebrew name means ‘He who sees God’


Zadkiel is the Archangel of Freedom.  His Hebrew name means ‘righteousness of God’.  He is the Archangel that you call upon to help heal deep, buried and destructive patterns.  He will show the way of forgiveness, forgiveness of ourselves as well as others.  Only when we truly forgive past hurts and pains can we fully move forward into peace, happiness and freedom.  Many therapists use a violet coloured cloth to bring in the cleansing energy of Zadkiel.

Finally, I want to stress once more that angelic intervention is not exclusive to the enlightened few.  They won’t intervene uninvited because as human souls we have free will, but if you want some help then all you have to do is ask.  

Top 10 Protection Tips

This week has seen a theme cropping up on more than one occasion so I want to share a couple of quick fixes I always do to manage any feelings of vulnerability. 

Before I talk about the actual tips for protection that I use myself and with clients I wanted to point out that feeling vulnerable is a pre-requisite to being human. This is when we need to remind ourselves that we are spiritual beings with a human body, emotions and experiences, it is not the other way around; a human with a spirit. 

Firstly, let’s talk about the need for protection. This will stem from a fear-based belief that you are not in control for one reason or another and to eliminate the fear you would need to look at the root cause for the fear in the first place. In the interim, we can make our life more comfortable with a few protection techniques.

  1. Tigers Eye – carry around Tigers Eye, it is the crystal for protection.
  2. Black Tourmaline – This is the heavyweight of protection crystals which you can place in the centre of your home or near the front entrance to ‘guard’ you.
  3. Bach’s Rescue Remedy – available from most health food shops and some pharmacies.
  4. Clapping – Enter the four corners of each room in your home and clap away the negative energy that you will be bringing due to anxiety emotion.
  5. Meditate – if you struggle to quiet your mind you can listen to many good guided meditations online.
  6. Music – play some cheerful and therapeutic music to lift the mood in your home.
  7. Write down all those unwanted thoughts on a piece of paper and burn it safely in a bowl. Release them to the universe and trust that time will reveal and/or heal.  
  8. Ask for guidance from your guides and watch out for signs.
  9. Clear clutter in your home – not only does this occupy you it also releases any stagnant energy in the home.
  10. Connect with nature – go for a walk in nature. This grounds you reconnecting you to mother earth.

Crystal Energy

Crystals are a beautiful gift from nature, used in healing practices and personal/spiritual development.  In the simplest of terms, we use them for two main functions; healing which tends to encompass the merging of healing powers of a few crystals together; or self development of a particular aspect using an appropriate crystal’s energy.

Detailed below are just some of the crystals that you can use to help. Some crystals have singular abilities and others can be used for multi properties such as quartz. How to Use Crystals

You can either use the crystal energy by holding the crystal during meditation or by wearing it as a piece of jewellery. In addition, you can also place crystals strategically around the home.

Chakra Healing

Chakras are wheels of light located all over our body. We have thousands of them but the seven major ones are located along our spine from its base to the crown of the head. Each chakra is represented by a colour of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

  • Third Eye/Brow Chakra – Above & between eyebrows – Indigo
  • Throat Chakra – Base of throat – Blue

Cleansing & Charging

As a footnote I need to mention cleansing and charging. Crystals are energy sources and will pick up energy on their way into your life and home.  As a rule of thumb always cleanse any crystals under a quick source of running water.  I have used tap water for years.  Run them under the tap and pat them dry or better still leave them to dry in full sunlight or moonlight.  Just like mini batteries they are charged under full natural light, day or night will do.

Do Guardian Angels Exist?

Although we are all flesh and bone which in itself is an amazing journey into life and energy, the most amazing part of us is our spirit. The inner self, higher self call it what you will – the soul.

It is your soul that shines and is the energy source and key to all the great things in this life. Your soul is here to learn, and the mind-blowing part is that some believe your soul signed up to all these lessons before you arrived. Personally, I like to think of it as a beautiful meeting place before your physical inception. You and several other souls (including those you feel immediately connected to in life) met and agreed to each other’s blueprints for life.

Some believe that we are soul’s moving through various planes of existence until we reach the very highest. A new soul will start at level 1 (pretty much like a PlayStation game – you start on a level) and you keep learning, going through birth and death, birth and death until you have learnt all that your soul needs for its evolvement. You don’t remember these previous existences because they would hinder this lifetime as a totally unique experience. However, if we truly desire it we can access these prior existences through a soul memory achieved as part of a past life regression.

So, before inception, you wanted to be here and were excited about this next chapter in your evolvement. At the same time, one of these souls agreed to accompany you and act as your Guardian from the moment of your birth until your last breath. Uniquely assigned to you, sometimes they are Ancestral which is a particularly touching tribute. They are your one true life companion.

As well as a Guardian Angel we have many spirit guides (they can be either temporary or a lifetime, it depends on their role/agreement with us). In fact, it is as our lowest points emotionally that they all arrive at once. It’s almost too ironic to understand why when you need them the most you can feel entirely cut off from the rest of the world, physically and spiritually. This is because during these times we operate at such a low, dense frequency and they operate at a much higher level.
Meditation is the easiest way to connect and communicate with these spiritual beings that live in the light. No groaning, it simply means to sit in silence, mentally enter a safe place and push your energy to the highest purest light to welcome them forward.

There is nothing to be afraid of because our Guardian Angel/Guides are always kind, loving and supportive. You may find it easier to connect in the quiet of the night or first thing in the morning. If you can set a regular time this will help you get into a routine of spiritual connection, try and think of it as a nightly or morning team meeting. Remember that they operate on a high vibration so the higher your resonance the easier it will be to gain a good, strong connection.

They can only steer us, never take over and neither would they want to, this is our personal journey of enlightenment. We also have free will which can never be compromised. We never forget the first time, during mine I wept like a baby due to the pure energy of love, I was humbled by the genuine authentic adoration that I received as it washed over me in gentle waves. That was over twenty-five years ago, these days we have a team meeting whilst I’m preparing breakfast unless I am genuinely struggling with a life direction.

Please know that you are not alone, ask your Guardian Angel or Spirit Guides for advice and wait for their answer. My only cautionary advice is that it may not be the answer you want!

How to cleanse and charge your crystals

This is a simple guide on how to cleanse and recharge your crystals. Think of them as little batteries that need a boost as do we all from time to time

You do not need to do them every month, but you will sense a drop in energy in your environment if you keep crystals nearby or a general flatness in yourself if you wear them. Crystals pick up on all types of energy, they are like sponges in your environment. If you are going through a rough patch wash and charge them frequently and place in the sun if you can’t wait for a full moon.

It’s important to understand that as they came from Mother Nature and they are recharged by her in the simplest of forms. Some practitioners use the rays of the sun, the rays of the moon, wash them in the sea or place them in a stream (in a net for easy removal! You don’t want to lose them).

I usually wait for a full moon, gather up all my crystals and carry out the following practice (probably every 3 months or more if I feel flat as mentioned)

  • Collect all your crystals in readiness early evening.
  • Use a clean bowl or glass fruit bowl something you can put all your crystals in and both hands.
  • Sprinkle a handful of rock salt (table salt will do fine) over the crystals in your bowl.
  • Turn on the tap and fill the bowl with cold water.
  • Run your hands all over the crystals, washing them and thanking them for their role in your life.
  • Once you feel that enough time has been spent cleansing them you can place them in the full moon’s rays. I place mine on a window sill on a sheet or two of kitchen paper in the light of the moon.
  • Leave them all night and return them to their usual place in the morning all charged and ready for action.

How to Develop Your Psychic Ability

At my last show this was a question that cropped up a lot and so it is something I share with you this week.

We are all born psychic but what does that mean?   Firstly, I will explain what defines a ‘psychic’, a little bit about our six senses, a protection exercise, and a link to a previous article on how to meet your spirit guides.

What is a psychic?

Contrary to popular stereotypes, we don’t wear gypsy clothes, sit in a tent with a crystal ball and adopt a ‘hippy’ lifestyle.   Not that there is anything remotely wrong with any of that but on the whole I receive a wide eyed look of surprise when I tell new acquaintances what I do.  I took me years to be able to say the word ‘psychic’ because it holds so much emotion for all concerned.  I still meet people to this day that will immediately shut down or turn away in case I can read their mind.    If I could have one wish in my lifetime it would be to change the perception of the word ‘psychic’.    We are normal everyday people, we have just spent a lot of time and effort developing our gifts to serve the world.    Sadly, we are often ridiculed, mistrusted, feared and outcast because of this but in the words of Bob Dylan “the times they are a changin’”. 

It is now more widely accepted that we are indeed all psychic but what does that mean?

We all accept that we have five senses; sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.  However, there is a sixth sense, this is not a physical sense as described but commonly referred to as a ‘gut feeling’ a ‘hunch’, a ‘feeling’, an ‘intuition’.  It’s this feeling that is the extra sense, our extra sensory perception.  That’s why these days a lot of psychics calls themselves ‘intuitive’ because we tap into that feeling and develop one of the following psychic senses.


This is the most common of all the senses in which we see mental images or moving pictures of a scene.  A bit like a photograph album clicking through our mind. 

Personally I do not see physically with my eyes but my mind’s eye and the image are usually very clear so that I can relay what I am seeing.  Some psychics see with their physical eyes but the majority of us see pictures in our minds.


This is when you hear spirit speaking in your mind.  Once again it does not tend to be a verbal communication like you or I would have but an internal communication.    This gift tends to start with a high pitched or buzzing noise in your ear.  At this point, you can train yourself to adjust the vibration, slow it down or increase it to actually hear the words that are being said. 


This is a sensing in its truest form, you feel the physical sensations either in the person you are reading for as in empathy or you can receive a sensation from the spirit world that will allow you to make an identification of the person that crossed over.  For example, if they had a painful leg they may give you this impression.  This is a fleeting feeling just long enough for you to identify with it.


Clairallience refers to an ability to receive information through the sense of scent.  Whichever scent you receive will relate to the spirit that has crossed over.  A favourite perfume, flower or tobacco smoke are common scents.


Information is received with this sense through taste.   A strong sensation in the mouth such as the taste of apples if your passed over relative used to enjoy apples and lived in an orchard.  You get the general idea.  

Once you have connected to the Divine and established a working relationship with your Spirit Guide, one of these senses will be a natural gift for you although you may develop all five.

I mention protection not because something sinister is lurking in the dark shadows, although my cat has a tendency to do this just to make me jump!  Using your psychic senses requires you to shift your vibration and use a higher energy.  Once the euphoria has worn off it can be extremely exhausting.  This because you are working with energy and giving your energy to the communication.

Before every contact you should imagine walking into a white bubble of love where you are safe, protected, happy and calm.    This is critical to your emotional wellbeing as it really can be draining.  You simply need to remember to step into your bubble, drink a glass of water, take a deep breath and begin.   

How to develop your psychic abilities for professional work

There are a number of ways to develop your psychic gifts.  You can join what we call a ‘development circle’ but these can be hard to find.  Another option is to go a psychic college such as The College of Psychic Studies in London where you can choose a course that appeals to you or if you are serious about becoming of service to the Spirit World the renowned “Arthur Findlay College” in Stansted. 

Quick Feng Shui Tips

I am a staunch advocate of the Black Hat Feng Shui method, basically because I tried to the use the Form school and compass method and after studying them wanted to move house, which was a bit drastic!.   Personally I found them too confusing for me and so I was delighted when I discovered the Black Hat Feng Shui or Black Sect as it is sometimes known.  

Black Hat was introduced to the USA in the mid 1980’s as a feng shui practice that can be easily adopted in Western Culture.  You don’t have to move home, get a compass or concern yourself with anything other than where is your front door and how to draw nine squares on a piece of paper.   

The objective is to create harmony in your environment, which will make you feel better, lift your mood and therefore raise your vibration and energy.  Energy is everything in this practice and working with energy is so much fun. 

How to apply Black Hat Feng Shui

Pick one area of your life at a time rather than run around the house changing everything at once and watch the results and then move on to the next.    A traditionally common area to start with is the money sector and I’ve written a previous article on how to enhance your money luck using Feng Shui.

Feng Shui works with the desire to harmonise chi, good energy in your home.   You draw a floor plan of your home, break it down into nine sections and work in each of the areas.   Each area is related to an area of your life and you can use colours and elements in each of these areas to adopt the harmony.

If you wish to consult a Feng Shui practitioner then that is also an option.  I use the Black Hat because it is simple and something I can easily do myself but you may feel that you would like to consult an expert if you are experiencing a serious sense of lack in this area. 

However if you are happy to have a go yourself then I’ve illustrated the bagua which is the feng shui map to overlay on your house plan.

Place the Career section where you enter your front door. If you use your back door, use this door as your main entrance.

I think from this you will get a general understanding of how to apply these principles of feng shui.   The most important aspect of Feng Shui is to clear clutter, it holds you down and the purpose is to create a harmonic environment.   The intention to clear space and place love and intention into every area of your life is a fantastic starting point.

This is by far my favourite number of all, it’s the why am I here, and what am I meant to be doing with my life. Unsurprisingly, it stems from your date of birth.  Unlike your name, it cannot be altered!  The other three parts of this article were based on your energy.  What type of character you are and the tendencies of your energetic vibration.  Your passions, your hidden talents and how you to appear to the world.   As you know, your energetic vibration can be changed to whatever you want it to be and it is the one thing we have complete control over.   This is where the different types of numerology can become so varied in their approach but they all agree on the truth of the date of birth, happily they also agree on the numerical vibrations of the number. 

When we look at the destiny number or life code as I prefer to call it, we use your date of birth to determine the ”what am I doing here on this beautiful earth place” your driving force.  If you live your life in this number, in whatever way you can, it can lead you to fulfilment.  Now that’s a journey that’s worth looking into.

So let’s get started.

Take a piece of paper, write out your full date of birth and add it all up until you reach one number, unless it is a master number of 11,22 or 33, which you don’t reduce as it has its own meaning.

For example, if you were born on the 12th July 1973 then you would calculate as follows using the appropriate month number:


12th July 1973

1 + 2 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 3 = 30  

3 + 0 = 3

This date of birth gives a Life Code of 3.

Once you have your number check out the following interpretations below and you may find the answers resonate.  

Numerology is a fascinating subject but as always it’s important to remember that you came into this life with free will, you can choose to explore this further or discard it as not for you.  I have so many clients that are stunned by the accuracy of their code.  For example, they have always wanted to travel and explore (life code 5) and yet they are stuck in a 9-5 job.  This doesn’t mean you throw in the job but you look at ways of exploring your life code in your spare time.   You will find fulfilment if you just study other cultures and ancient truths.   

In case you are wondering, I am a life code 3, which means I have a burning desire to leave something creative and lasting.   It is also the number of the mystic, as we pull from the unseen and make it a reality. 

Life Code 1.

  • You want to lead the way, you will be independent and struggle to follow a set of rules, preferring to make the rules.  You will feel driven to prove yourself.

Life Code 2

  • You will be strongest in a relationship and have the ability to see both sides of an argument.  A natural peacemaker – harmony is your goal. You will feel driven to experience connection and intimacy

When you take your life code and your talents (the number behind your full name) you can combine the both to allow you to use your natural energy to bring your life code to ‘life’. 

For example, ey essence is ‘5’ and my life code ‘3’.  Therefore, I am driven to find the truth and share it creatively.  Hopefully that will give you an idea of how you can match the two numbers to create a reality that is wonderful and unique to you.  Living a life you were born to live before you were programmed to conform within society is a purposeful endeavour, I think you’ll agree.

Chaldean Numerology – Find Your Talents

Would you like to use the Mystical Wisdom of numbers to discover hidden truths behind your birth name and date.  I use the Chaldean Numerology system versus the Pythagorean Numerology because this is taken from the Phonetic alphabet and was around before our Western Alphabet was introduced.   It takes into account the mystical wisdom surrounding numbers in relation to the alphabet using the vibrational energy of sound.

You need to take your full birth name, as given on your birth certificate to find your life purpose number.   We do this by corresponding each letter in your name with a numerical value.  Once you have this you will need to add them all up to give you a two digit number.  This two digit number is then added up to give you a singular number – your life purpose number.   Number meaning are given 1 – 9 inclusive.  However, if your name adds up to the Master Numbers of 11 or 22 then you use these numbers as they are considered whole numbers in their own right.

Here is an example using William Shakespeare, assuming no middle name

Add up all the numbers = 59
Reduce down to a single number so 5 + 9 = 14
1 + 4 = 5

Keep reducing down until you have one of the following numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9

As previously mentioned, the only numbers that you do not reduce down to a single digit are the numbers 11 or 22.  They have their own interpretations
